Optimization: Custom database design, programming and problem solving

Taking an existing system and making it run more efficiently--that's database optimization. It's accomplished through reviewing how queries are built, adding indexing, de-duplicating, cleaning data (did you know that those errant keystrokes were actually saved?) and turning on and observing performance measures.
