Video Editing in Linux - submitted by Bob A. (Part 2)
Hi Paris,
Here's a perhaps last footnote to my email about video editing in
Linux. My old Panasonic recorded the time/date info onto the video or
not, depending on a toggle on the camera. The JVC always shows
time/date info in the LCD while you are recording, but, the video/audio
stream goes completely into the MOD file, and the time/date info into
the MOI file. If you play video out of the camera, the two files are
combined, and you see the original date/time info. Once you download to
your computer, you cannot combine them, so the video that displays is
without time/date information. (This is actually good, since the
time/date is annoying at times when you don't want it. I used to regret
not having turned it off on the Panasonic.) (Another footnote to the
footnote: There is a Windows program called SDCopy that will apparently
copy both MOD and MOI files into a single container, so that you can
have the time/date in the video if you want. I haven't been able to
test (and have forgotten where I saw) a Python equivalent for Linux, but
it is supposed to be out there somewhere, and I saw it at least once.)
And so, after importing the files, you can edit away on the MOD files as
mpeg2 files, and put any time/date info that you want into the title
before the segment. And where would you get that? Duh! From the MOI
file stamp in File Browser or any other file listing. Curiously, this
has not occurred to those engaged in web discussions about how to read
MOI files.
I think this solves all of my personal problems. I happened to notice
the time/date absence on the computer yesterday for the first time, but
it has quickly come to a resolution.
